Povzetek projekta:

The corrosion of metallic parts in military, civil and industrial systems and infrastructures presents a significant maintenance challenge that affects the safety, lifetime, down-time, and reliability of these structures. The proposed project shall investigate new ways for design of fiber-optic sensors that could detect and monitor the appearance and progress of corrosion processes reliably. Small size, high corrosion resistance, harsh environment compatibility, multiplexing capability, interrogation over large distances and EMI interference immunity make fiber optic systems ideal candidates for corrosion sensing. Current fiber optic sensor solutions, however, rely mostly on indirect measurement methods like, for example, the appearance of strain in structures that is caused by corrosive changes, or as special sacrificial sensor coatings that corrode together with the observed material. However, such approaches have limited reliability, and might provide a delayed and inaccurate response. The proposed project shall investigate more direct optical corrosion detection methods that will utilize observations of small changes in the monitored surfaces. Reliable and early detection might be achieved in this way, while the small size of the proposed sensors allows for different interrogation and embedment possibilities.
