Detailed information about the joint second-cycle master’s study programme in Bioinformatics is published on the website of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Maribor.

The Bioinformatics study programme is an interdisciplinary programme that combines the fields of healthcare, computer science, and natural sciences.

The programme enables the use of information and communication technologies in the study of genomics and proteomics for the purpose of disease prevention and treatment. Bioinformatics is also important in the development of new gene-sensitive medicines, understanding the functioning of living organisms—especially humans—and is particularly significant in genome research due to the large amount of complex data involved in such studies.

Students will acquire advanced knowledge in the fields of bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, computer algorithms, development of biometric applications, applications of molecular and cellular biology methods, biochemistry, biophysics, biomedicine, medical and healthcare informatics, solving biomedical problems, and the use of information technologies for the storage, analysis, synthesis, and visualization of genomic and proteomic data.

Within the study programme, students gain advanced knowledge in broader professional fields, competence in solving professional, work-related, and other problems—especially through finding new sources of knowledge and applying scientific methods—while also developing the ability to communicate within and across disciplines, professional and scientific critical thinking and responsibility, initiative and independence in decision-making, and the management of highly demanding tasks.

The main objectives of the programme are:

  • acquiring new fundamental knowledge, skills, attitudes, and professional values;
  • training for independent search and acquisition of new sources of knowledge in both scientific and professional fields;
  • training in the use of the latest scientific research methods, including advanced biometric and analytical procedures, in predictive, new, and changing circumstances;
  • training for independent research in various areas of bioinformatics;
  • training in the use of the latest technologies, tools, and software in the field of bioinformatics;
  • training to take responsibility for managing highly complex systems related to bioinformatics;
  • developing the qualities of independent and responsible leadership as well as teamwork coordination.
