We invite you to the first of the autumn series of ATHENA Sci-Cafe lectures, organised by the Hellenic Mediterranean University, Greece, together with ATHENA European University.

The lecture will be given by Prof. Michael Graetzel from the Swiss EPFL. Professor Michael Graetzel is considered one of the primary inventors and gurus in photovoltaics. His work has received more than 436785 citations, and his h-index is 288!!

Fulbright Scholar Prof. dr. Yu David Liu

Prof. dr. Yu David Liu from State University New York Binghamton received a Fulbright scholarship for four months of research at the University of Maribor in the field of "green computing". At the Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, he will participate in the design and implementation of an energy-aware programming language with self-optimization capability powered by evolutionary computation.

Prof. dr. Liu explained why he decided to come to University of Maribor: "This project is a collaboration with a team of researchers led by Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik. It builds on University of Maribor's research strengths on domain-specific languages and evolutionary computation, with a new focus on energy efficiency. Slovenia is an international leader in sustainable development. The Fulbright project aims at complementing this multidisciplinary effort with a perspective from the computing world. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange in the United States, with a mission of contributing to mutual understanding and finding solutions to challenges facing our communities and our world."

ERK 2022 Round table: The future and development of Artificial Intelligence in Slovenia

Round tables were held at the conference for the first time this year. One of them was about the future and development of artificial Intelligence in Slovenia, and one of the three panelists was Dr. Damjan Strnad from our faculty.

In recent years, we have witnessed exponential development and progress in the field of artificial intelligence all over the world. Where does Slovenia fit into this story? How is the development of such technologies in our country? Can we compete with the greatest with our knowledge? Can a Slovenian company compete on the international market with its solutions? These are just some of the topics that were talked about at the round table.

Three experts from industry and science field participated at the round table: Dr. Janez Perš, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana, Dr. Damjan Strnad, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, University of Maribor, and Dr. Tadej Justin, Medius d.o.o.

On Monday and Tuesday, September 19th and 20th, the 31st International Electrotechnical and Computer Conference ERK 2022 was held in Hotel Bernardin in Portorož. The conference is a traditional meeting of experts, not only in the field of electrical engineering and computer science, but also in other fields where electrical engineering and computer science are included.

A student competition of the IEEE Slovenian Section is also held at the conference every year. Student Maja Glušič (left on the photo), under the mentorship of Assoc. prof. dr. Aleš Hace, presented an article titled "Intuitivno učenje kolaborativne robotske roke s pomočjo mešane resničnosti" and achieved an excellent 1st place in the student paper competition. 3rd place was shared by student Matic Markovič (middle on the photo), who, under the mentorship of Dr. Primož Sukič and Sr. Instr. M. Sc. Andrej Orgulan, presented an article titled "Merilni sistem za določanje kvalitete LED svetlobnih virov za gospodinjstva", and student Jaka Rober (right on the photo), who, under the mentorship of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin Petrun, presented an article titled "Vpliv impedance omrežja na vodenje trifaznega aktivnega pretvornika v orientaciji omrežne napetosti". The best student papers from the University of Maribor and the University of Ljubljana qualify for the next regional competition, the IEEE Student Paper Contest Region 8, which covers the entire area of Europe, most of Asia and Africa.

Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik gave an invited lecture on September 20, 2022, at the Università Ca' Foscari, Venice, entitled "Formal and Practical Aspects of Domain-Specific Languages: An Overview of my work on DSLs", where he presented his research work in the field of domain-specific languages. He has been working in this field for more than 20 years and is among the most cited researchers.

On 20th of September a ceremony was held at the University of Maribor to celebrate its 47th anniversary. Special attention was paid to the symbolic inauguration of the Rector, prof. dr. Zdravko Kačič, who started his second mandate as a rector in June. Prizes and awards were given to students, as well as the titles of honorary doctor and professor emeritus. Two of our students were among the students who received awards and recognitions for their above-average effort and demonstrated success in areas that go beyond their academic obligations.

AWARD FOR THE BEST STUDENT VOLUNTEER OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MARIBOR was received by student LEON ABRAHAM and an AWARD FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF EXTRACURICCULAR ACTIVITIES was awarded to student MARKO GLUHAK.

Online Slovene language course for international students (University of Maribor)

Audi Development Camp

Our student Jernej Frangež took part in the Audi development camp under the mentorship of Assoc. prof. dr. Jožef Ritonja. He achieved the best team award and the most talented student award. Congratulations!

Audi Development Camp is a four-week summer program for engineering students organised by Széchenyi István University Győr and Audi Hungary. This year tasks were related to an Audi e-tron electric vehicle, where students had to complete Hardware-in-the-Loop / Software-in-the-Loop simulations. Computer tools used for project were Matlab/Simulink and dSPACE. The best team was selected based on the committee's evaluations of the model's performance and presentations.

DAPHNE research and innovation project

Between 9th and 12th January 2022, the Conference on Innovative Data Systems Research (CIDR 2022) was held in Chaminade, California (USA). At this conference, some results of the DAPHNE project, in which Institute of Computer Science UM FERI also participates, were presented to the public for the first time. The presentation is also available on YouTube, and more about the project is available on the project website https://daphne-eu.eu.

The DAPHNE project was reported on the use of the state and EU infrastructure of HPC Vega a few days ago by the Science Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport on the GOV.SI portal (https://www.gov.si/novice/2022-01-05-hpc-vega-kot-temelj-za-inovacijsko-raziskovalni-projekt-daphne/). The head of the UM consortium share in the DAPHNE project, assoc. prof. dr. Aleš Zamuda, a member of the Institute of Computer Science, also shared a few words on behalf of the entire UM FERI team for this project and the use of the HPC infrastructure.

ATHENA Research Book: Call for Papers and Contributions

ATHENA, a European University alliance of seven higher education institutions, aims at fostering excellence in research and innovation by facilitating international cooperation. The ATHENA Research Book provides a platform that promotes joint and interdisciplinary research projects of both advanced and early-career researchers.

For the first pilot collection (Volume 1), we are currently inviting Review Papers, presenting prominent scientific achievements of the ATHENA Alliance partners, Original Research Papers, focusing on ideas and achievements contributing to the concept of the European University, and Students Papers. CobotSense: Intelligent 3D safety sensor for cobot applications

In COVR Project "CobotSense: Intelligent 3D safety sensor for cobot applications ", the partners successfully reached the final Milestone 2 (after 9 of 9 months). FOKUS TECH d.o.o. has managed to raise the scanning speed of their prototype LiDAR sensor to 4.8 fps (from the starting 1 fps), UM FERI has integrated functionalities of motion prediction for both, robot and operator, the protective separation distance (PSD) calculation, and real-time adjustment of the robot’s speed in order to realize the speed and separation monitoring (SSM) principle. FANUC ADRIA d.o.o. has provided laboratory & industrial testing environments and their knowledge in the robot controller communication with external devices. An informative use case was presented by Youtube video and, as the main deliverable, the COVR Toolkit was extended with the Protocol for testing SSM cobot applications with 3D sensors.
