On Wednesday, 25 September 2024, the kick-off meeting of the RINKO project: Development of Digital Competences and Basic Knowledge of Computer Science and Informatics in Kindergartens, took place at UM FERI.
The RINKO project will contribute to the wide-ranging development of digital literacy in preschool education, enabling the early introduction of fundamental knowledge of computer science and informatics, which will ensure that children are prepared for the challenges of modern digital society from an early age.
The meeting was hosted by UM FERI as the project coordinator and attended by representatives from UM PEF, who designed the content as well as the representatives of ten Slovenian kindergartens involved in the project: Vrtec Murska Sobota, Osnovna šola Vransko – Tabor – Enota Vrtec, Vrtec Jožice Flander, Vzgojno izobraževalni zavod Vrtec Ormož, Vrtec Pedenjped Novo mesto, Vrtec Jelka, Vrtec Manka Golarja Gornja Radgona, Vrtec Škofja Loka, Vrtec Borisa Pečeta and Vrtec Laško.
After the initial partner presentation, the work packages and expected outcomes were reviewed in detail, and the organization of the project, including the definition of working groups, was outlined. Kindergarten representatives highlighted specific challenges they face in implementing computer science and informatics into their programs. The project logo and the preliminary dissemination plan were also presented.

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics of the University of Maribor was the 56th. The University of Informatics and Technology was once again at the forefront of the 56th International Fair of Crafts and Entrepreneurship (MOS) 2024. More than 50 innovations in the field of high technologies and new business models were presented at this year's event, which took place from 18 to 22 September in Celje, within the framework of the "Science and Economy Meeting Point", led by Janez Škrlec from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.
FERI participated in the event by presenting its latest technological achievements in various fields. We focused on the advanced technological solutions that we are developing at our faculty.
We are pleased to announce that FERI has been awarded the Silver Award of the Cologne Fair for its innovative work in the field of electrical engineering and computer science. This award is a reflection of the professionalism, innovation and commitment to progress that our faculty demonstrates in both research and economic fields. A number of our researchers and students also presented their projects and innovations during the presentations, thus continuing the successful integration of science and business.
The Science-Business Nexus once again attracted a lot of attention from visitors, especially students, and provided an insight into the latest technologies and trends, such as micro, bio and nanotechnologies, bionics and space technologies. In fact, the Science-Business Nexus received three awards at MOS 2024. The Gold Award of the Cologne Fair by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation thanks to the innovation - the bionic head as a technology platform by Janez Škrlec. We received the Silver Award of the Celje Fair, and the special award for the bionic head as an innovation and technological platform was also awarded to Janez Škrlec by the Municipality of Celje, for which we congratulate him.
FERI would like to thank the organisers and all the partners involved, especially our researchers, whose work contributes to the development of technological innovation in Slovenia and beyond. 40 years ago the first generation of computer science students enrolled at the then Faculty of Technical Sciences, University of Maribor.
The Computer Science study program at that time had three majors in the 2nd year: Software, Informatics, Logic and Systems. All first-generation students chose the Software major, which was the forerunner of today's Computer Science and Information Technologies study program.
40th anniversary of the enrollment of the first generation of computer science students at the University of Maribor and, at the same time, the 35th anniversary of the first graduates in computer science at the University of Maribor the former students celebrated with an event and visited the faculty again. They were received by the head of the Institute of Computer Science, prof. dr. Aleš Holobar, and visited the Laboratory for Geospatial Modelling, Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence (GeMMA).
