Lucija Brezočnik, a graduate of the Informatics and Technologies of Communication master’s study program and PhD student of Computer Science and Informatics, achieved a remarkable international success. She won the IEEE Regions 8 Student Paper Contest in the competition with the best student authors’ scientific papers in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Informatics from all over Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Lucija qualified for the finals as the winner of the competition organised by the IEEE Slovenia Section. The final competition took place between 6-8 July in the framework of the IEEE EUROCON 2017 International Conference held in Ohrid, Macedonia.

Her article Feature selection for classification using particle swarm optimization written under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Vili Podgorelec presents a new method for the problem of finding informative attributes in high-dimensional data, which can significantly reduce the number of attributes, thus achieving better classification results on complex data sets. With this remarkable achievement, the University of Maribor and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science rise among the most successful institutions within this prestigious competition because Lucija's victory has been already the second one for the UM-FERI. Namely, Lucija's mentor, then the student, Vili Podgorelec, won in the finals of this contest in 1999.

Congratulations!

Graphic Matters Open Call Poster Competition 2017

Publish date: 2017/05/09 | Expire date: 2017/07/09 | Author: Pia Prebevšek

News is expired!

Graphic Matters (formally known as Graphic Design Festival Breda) is a month-long gathering of graphic stories and visual activities that make you see the world differently. Young talented designers and established names shed their light on current stories and offer you a new perspective.

'Shut Up Speak Up' is the theme of the Open Call Poster Project. Fake news, alternative facts, whistleblowers and polarising politicians. The contemporary social and political unrest is not about left or right, or right and wrong. Can you still trust the media when issues are complex and international? As a graphic designer, you play an important role in visualising outspoken opinions. Graphic Matters shows critical imagination by activists, pranksters and good guys who honour freedom of expression and challenge their audience to shape their personal opinion.

From what attitude you challenge your audience? Are you an activist warning us for the evil in this world? Do you directly attack a company, party or person? Are you a prankster opening eyes with visual jokes? Do you create confusion with satire about current situations? Or are you a good guy? Do you stimulate the good in people from an ever-positive attitude?

Send your design with the following specifications: PDF, A3 (29,7 X 42 cm), max 5 MB / 200 dpi, CMYK colour mode. Winners have to submit a new file in size A0.

There is no entry fee.

Eligibility: Open to entries from all over the world.

Prize

A professional jury will choose the fifty most creative, innovative, original and authentic posters. These posters will be shown during Graphic Matters from September 22nd to October 22nd, 2017 in the city centre of Breda (Netherlands).

Five winners will receive a VIP experience including overnight stay and travel budget.

News is expired!

EIT Digital is inviting you to participate in their Summer Schools. Registration is possible until 15th of May 2017.

Summer Schools presentation

The Summer Schools provide an immersive experience in innovation with real business cases with themes aligned to our action lines in Digital Infrastructure, Digital Cities, Digital Industry, Digital Wellbeing and Digital Finance. We welcome attendees from industry, academia and research institutes.

Limited place

Summer Schools are mandatory for the on-campus EIT Digital Master School students, but a limited number of places are also available for academia, researchers and professionals who want to spend two-weeks on an intensive course to hone both their technical knowledge and ability to innovate.

During the Summer School you will:

· assess the impact of ICT technologies and innovations, markets and stakeholders

· explore how to convert ideas into business opportunities and marketable solutions

· perform a business planning process

· understand user-centricity, business life cycles, global market trends, industry value chains, market segments, IPR issues, financial and risk-related issues

· improve personal presentation and communications skills, decision-making and leadership competencies

Experience

According to an industry attendee last year, the experience of working together with students at a Summer School is very valuable: “Students have a fresh way of looking at things. For them, the sky is the limit. They don’t hold back their thinking yet. In a professional life, you forget this way of thinking, you hold back to fit in a company culture. Another side effect was that I found new interns for my company. These students have a technical background and the business skills we are looking for.”

News is expired!

Data science and big data are the next big thing in the automotive industry, and if you would like to find out how exactly and what the future holds, come to lecture room G2-P02 on May 19, at 10:15, to hear about Big Data in Automotive Industry from Dr. Michael Hammer, PhD and Dr. Sandi Pohorec, PhD from AVL List GmbH, the world’s largest independent company for the development of powertrain systems with internal combustion engines. Both speakers are heavily involved in all of Big Data related activities within AVL List.

Within the automotive industry traditional development goals have always been about improving the driver safety and comfort. Today, with new technologies, such as assisted or autonomous driving, connected cars or new sensor technologies, like vision systems, help enormously in achieving these goals. They also create an enormous amount of data being in cars and this data is increasing rapidly. Simultaneously, the challenges in developing and testing these new elements and their connectivity are also increasing.

AVL, as a long lasting development partner of powertrains and development tools for manufacturers all over the globe, is taking the challenge of this new area of digitalization. Big Data technologies are essential elements to generate value out of the above mentioned data. This presentation should give you an overview of AVL, the challenges regarding data and digitalization and a first overview on the upcoming use cases for data science and Big Data technologies in automotive industry.

Dr. Michael Hammer is, in addition to being in charge of coordinating “Big Data” related activities within AVL’s Powertrain Engineering, a manager for reliability engineering at AVL List Graz, Austria. Dr. Hammer studied mechanical engineering with focus on analytical and numerical mechanics. His PhD was focused on numerical mathematics applied to contact mechanics, solving large displacement and large deformation frictional body contact problems. After completing his PhD, he joined AVL in 2013 working on tribology in combustion engines and damage modelling. Since 2015 he has been in charge of the reliability engineering team at AVL List in Graz, focusing on big data issues.

Dr. Sandi Pohorec is a data scientist responsible for research and development of Big Data technologies within AVL’ Instrumentations and Test systems, focusing on the data managements and processing software tools developed by AVL. Dr. Pohorec studied at Faculty for electrical engineering and computer science (FERI). His PhD was focused on validation of machine learning with automated natural language processing methods. Since joining AVL in 2014 he is working on various research projects and designing the future, Big Data, architecture of AVL’s data management and processing products.

Interview with Calvin McCoy (Mallon Technology, Ireland)

In the second week of April we hosted Calvin McCoy from Mallon Technology (Ireland) on our faculty.
Click "Read more" to read a short interview with him.

Why did you come to FERI and what are you doing here?

I'm here to learn about data processing earth observations, about radar and what we can do with it. The company I work for is actually a Geographic information system (GIS) company, we observe the landscape, forests, etc..

Is this your first time in Slovenia?

Yes, I am here for the first time. I did not have much time for sightseeing, but I was at a football game and walked around city a little. Perhaps I will manage to visit Pohorje. I am leaving on Saturday.

How do you like it here?

I do not know a lot of Irish people who were already here, so I did not really know what to expect. Most of us at least approximately know where Slovenia is or might have heard of Ljubljana, but not Maribor. It was also hard to get to you from Ireland, there aren't good connections and I traveled almost 18 hours by plane and train. But I don't regret it. Slovenia is much nicer and peaceful than I imagined. I met some PhD students, all people here are friendly, relaxed and speak English very well.
