A study by the research group 07896-010 (System Software Laboratory) has been published in a distinguished journal "Proceedings of the IEEE" with the Impact Factor JCR IF (2016): 9.237. This paper has currently the highest impact factor at the Institute of Computer Science (https://cs.feri.um.si/en/research-activities/publications/).
D. FARINA, A. HOLOBAR. Characterization of human motor units from surface EMG decomposition. Proceedings of the IEEE, 2016, 104(2): 353-373, JCR IF (2016): 9.237
Motor units are the smallest functional units of our movements. The study of their activation provides a window into the mechanisms of motor control of humans. The classic methods for motor unit investigations date to several decades ago. They are based on invasive recordings with selective needle electrodes. Conversely, the non-invasive (surface) EMG has been commonly processed as an interference signal with the information extraction limited to its global characteristics that are only crudely associated to the underlying motor unit activities. In the last decade, we proposed the methods for reliable extraction of individual motor unit activities from the interference surface EMG signal. In this review, we describe these methods and their applications in human-machine interfaces. This study has been published in a distinguished IEEE Proceedings journal with the JCR impact factor of 9.237.

Lucija Brezočnik, a graduate of the Informatics and Technologies of Communication master’s study program and PhD student of Computer Science and Informatics, achieved a remarkable international success. She won the IEEE Regions 8 Student Paper Contest in the competition with the best student authors’ scientific papers in the fields of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Informatics from all over Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Lucija qualified for the finals as the winner of the competition organised by the IEEE Slovenia Section. The final competition took place between 6-8 July in the framework of the IEEE EUROCON 2017 International Conference held in Ohrid, Macedonia.
Her article Feature selection for classification using particle swarm optimization written under the mentorship of Prof. Dr Vili Podgorelec presents a new method for the problem of finding informative attributes in high-dimensional data, which can significantly reduce the number of attributes, thus achieving better classification results on complex data sets. With this remarkable achievement, the University of Maribor and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science rise among the most successful institutions within this prestigious competition because Lucija's victory has been already the second one for the UM-FERI. Namely, Lucija's mentor, then the student, Vili Podgorelec, won in the finals of this contest in 1999.
Congratulations!
