The University programming marathon (UPM) is an all-Slovenian competition for students in programming with an emphasis on knowledge of data structures and algorithms.

With the co-organization of the Institute of Computer Science UM FERI, the state competition on computational thinking Bober 2018/19 successfully concluded on 12 January 2019. The competition was attended by 250 primary and secondary school pupils who were selected from 33,500 attendees from local school competitions. During the event, two lectures were organized: Artificial Intelligence Today: Background of Some Recent Developments (Assoc. Prof. dR: Damjan Strnad) and Telecommunications: Remote Transmission of Information (Assist. Prof. Dr. Boštjan Vlaovič, Ph.D.). Learn more about the event at https://tekmovanja.acm.si/bober .

28th International Expert Meeting Power Engineering 2019 will be held at the Faculty for Electrical Engineering and Compuer Science in Maribor from May 14TH to 16TH 2019.

The Hour of Code, which took place from 3rd till 9th December 2018, is a global movement designed to generate excitement in young people about programming and technology. ACM congratulated all ACM sections that participated in 2018 - among them is the ACM Student Chapter Maribor. We invite you to the 14th professional conference Computer Image processing and its application in Slovenia 2019, which will be held at UM-FERI on Thursday, March 21, 2019 (G2-Beta lecture room). The novelty of this year's conference is the afternoon section titled "Deep learning: Practical advices from experts".

Prof. dr. Janez Brest participated as an invited speaker at Summer School 2018 on Computational Intelligence: Theory, Implementation & Applications, which was held form 22 until 27 November 2018, in Hyderabad, India. At the summer school, which was organized by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, he conducted three lectures on Differential Evolution and Applications.

The ACM Student Chapter Maribor will organize "Pizza Party" on Wednesday, December 19th, at 17h in G2-P04, with the aim of popularizing the section among students. Before that will be the presentation of the ACM competition "University Programming Marathon" (UPM) and the presentation of student section ACM Maribor. You will learn how to apply for the UPM competition and a number of useful tips from experienced competitors.

ACM is an international association for teaching and research in the field of computer science. It was founded in 1947. The Slovenian subsidiary ACM Slovenia was founded in 2001 and is one of the main Slovenian computer science societies, which is working on the development of computer science in Slovenia.

On Friday, 7 December 2018, ACM Slovenija Annual Assembly was held at UM FERI, where we also elected a new presidency. Prof. dr. Aleš Holobar had a lecture entitled Internet muscles: digital codes in our body.

On November 27, 2018 Clarivate Analytics, the Web of Science Group, published a list of highly-cited researchers for 2018. Prof. dr. Marjan Mernik is for the second year in a row on the list. His researches ranks among the top 1% most cited works in the field of Computer Science earning the mark of exceptional impact. The Hour of Code will be held this year from 3red of December 2018 until 9th of December 2018. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computing to demystify the code and show that everyone can learn the basics of programming. Namely, each student must have the opportunity to learn computer science, since improves problem solving, logic and creativity. As such, with early start they will have foundations for success in all professions of the 21st century. The Institute of Computer Science will this year again realize over 10 events on the topic of computer programming.

The Institute of Computer Science organizes on Thursday, 13.12.18 a professional excursion to AVL GmbH, Graz, Austria, for the third year students of professional higher education programme Computer Science and Information Technology. AVL is the world's largest independent company for development, simulation and testing technology of powertrains (hybrid, combustion engines, transmission, electric drive, batteries and software) for passenger cars, trucks and large engines. With this Scholarship Candidates from Countries with bilateral agreements (between the governments/ministries) can come to the study exchange.

Main goal of the event is bringing computers and computer programming closer to the broader audience. At the same time to demonstrate advantages of using and adapting computational power. Computers are entering in every aspect of our life. The question is if we know hot to fully use this fast growing technology. Previous two weeks we organized nineteen events, which were spread in region of Eastern Slovenia, from Ravne na Koroškem to Murska Sobota.

Members of the Laboratory for real time systems, in cooperation with the Community Health Care Center, Adolf Drolc and the Laboratory for System Design developed the "Smart Toothbrush Holder" and obtained a patent for it.

University programming marathon (UPM, http://tekmovanja.acm.si/upm) is a Slovenian competition for students in their knowledge of programming, data structures and algorithms. The university champions for 2018 have been determined in the final round.
